THIS to Ring Opening Bell for NASDAQ
Washington DC, December 16, 2008 – Maria-Elena Tierno will represent THIS, a non-profit organization assisting diplomats and their families, and ring the ceremonial opening bell for the NASDAQ Stock Market at 9:30 EST today. She will be joined by THIS volunteers and diplomats from Afghanistan and Australia.
- “In a global economy it has never been more important to build international friendships,” said Maria-Elena Tierno, a THIS board member. “THIS is an organization that welcomes diplomats and their families to the United States and provides ongoing cultural and educational programs to make their extended stay in the United States a positive experience. Participating in the opening bell ceremony allows THIS a unique opportunity to showcase its great work thanks to hundreds of volunteers giving their time, in-kind services, and monetary contributions to make it happen.”
- THIS provides services to more than 4,000 diplomats representing 180 foreign missions currently residing in the Nation’s capital. Organized in 1961 at the request of the Chief of Protocol of the United States, THIS helps new diplomats and their families adapt to life in the United States. THIS welcomes newly-arrived diplomatic families and introduces them to the culture, history, language, and government of the United States through a variety of educational programs and events designed to foster international understanding.
