Cultural Exchange Groups
THIS Cultural Exchanges meet once or twice per month at the homes of volunteers throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area. There are 16 Cultural Exchanges based on geographical areas, languages, and specific interest areas. Many volunteers and some diplomats from each group have planned wonderful events for 2023-2024. Join the groups that are best for you, make new friends, see old friends, and learn about each other’s cultures and customs.
THIS monthly newsletters feature photos of recent gatherings. Most THIS activities begin in September and end in May or June each year. THIS Cultural Exchanges welcome both new and returning members. Join a THIS Cultural Exchange today by contacting the Cultural Exchange chairs found below.
Book Discussion: This group meets on the last Friday of every month from 10:30am-12:30pm to discuss international literature. Volunteers host and lead discussions.
Bridge: This group plays contract bridge in the informal setting of volunteers’ homes 2nd and 3rd Mondays from 11:00am-2:30pm. A fundamental understanding of bridge is required to participate.

Geographic Cultural Exchange Groups
These monthly meetings are hosted by volunteers and provide an informal setting in which to discuss topics of mutual interest.
Washington, DC: 4th Wednesday, 11:00am-1:00pm
Bethesda/Chevy Chase, MD: 3rd Tuesday, 11:00am-1:00pm
Potomac: 2nd Thursday, 10:30am-12:30pm
Arlington, VA THIS/AAUW: 2nd Wednesday, 11:00am-1:00pm
Northern Virginia: 1st Wednesday, 11:00am-1:00pm
Culture-Specific Exchange Groups
Individuals meet informally every month in these groups to explore cultures and polish language skills. Note each individual group’s language requirement; not all groups are conducted in English.
Arabic and South Asian: 4th Wednesday, 11:00am-1:00pm (in English)
French – 2nd Tuesday 11:30 am – 1:30 pm*
German: 2nd Friday, 10:30am-12:30pm (in German)
Italian: 3rd Friday, 10:30am-12:30pm (in Italian)
Japanese: 2nd Friday, 10:30am-12:30pm (in English)
Spanish: 1st Monday, 11:00am-1:00pm (in Spanish)
